Improving World Wide Web Latency

چکیده

The HTTP protocol, as currently used in the World Wide Web, uses a separate TCP connection for each le requested. This adds signi cant and unnecessary overhead, especially in the number of network round trips required. We analyse the costs of this approach and propose simple modi cations to HTTP that, while interoperating with unmodi ed implementations, avoid the unnecessary network costs. We have implemented our modi cations, and our measurements show that they dramatically reduce latencies. We have also investigated the e ectiveness of a scheme to mask network latency by prefetching les likely to be requested next, while the user is browsing through the currently displayed page. Our results indicate a signi cant bene t from prefetching at the cost of an increase in network tra c.

Web Components: A Concept for Improving Personalization and Reducing User Perceived Latency on the World Wide Web

In this paper we address one of the performance problems of the World Wide Web, known as User Perceived Latency (UPL). We begin by presenting a new definition of UPL. Next we present a concept that may benefit the WWW and reduce UPL. This is the concept of Web Components. We show how Web Components can work together with other concepts for efficient Web Data manipulation and delivery, in order ...

A Study on Web Prefetching Techniques

The growth of the World Wide Web has emphasized the need for improvement in user latency. One of the techniques that are used for improving user latency is Web Prefetching. Web prefetching is one of the techniques proposed to reduce user’s perceived latencies in the World Wide Web. The spatial locality shown by user’s accesses makes it possible to predict future accesses based on the previous o...

A Dynamic Web Page Prediction Model Based on Access Patterns to Offer Better User Latency

The growth of the World Wide Web has emphasized the need for improvement in user latency. One of the techniques that are used for improving user latency is Caching and another is Web Prefetching. Approaches that bank solely on caching offer limited performance improvement because it is difficult for caching to handle the large number of increasingly diverse files. Studies have been conducted on...

Improving the performance of client Web object retrieval

The growth of the Internet has generated Web pages that are rich in media and that incur significant rendering latency when accessed through slow communication channels. The technique of Web-object prefetching can potentially expedite the presentation of Web pages by utilizing the current Web page’s view time to acquire the Web objects of likely future Web pages. The performance of the Web obje...

Improving Performance of World Wide Web by Adaptive Web Traffic Reduction

The ever increasing use of World Wide Web in the existing network, results in poor performance. Several techniques have been developed for reducing web traffic by compressing the size of the file, saving the web pages at the client side, changing the burst nature of traffic into constant rate etc. No single method was adequate enough to access the document instantly through the Internet. In thi...
